Weerstand en veerkracht van gemengde bestanden

Plagen, pathogenen, onkruiden, vuur, droogte, sneeuw en wind bedreigen bomen en bossen en kunnen omvangrijke schade veroorzaken. In de winter van 2009 velde de storm Klaus alleen al in de Landes (Zuidwest-Frankrijk), 37,1 million m3 zeeden (Inventaire Forestier National: http://www.ifn.fr). Aantasting door een keversoort (Dendroctonus ponderosae) veroorzaakte sterfte van vrijwel alle lodgepole dennen (Pinus contorta) in een gebied van meer dan 13 miljoen ha in het westen van Canada sinds 1999 (1). Over het algemeen wordt meer aandacht geschonken aan de impact van dergelijke verstoringen op de biodiversiteit dan omgekeerd. In deze bijdrage zal daarom bekeken worden of boomsoortensamenstelling en -diversiteit van een bosbestand een effect heeft op de weerstand tegen biotische en abiotische stressfactoren.
