Effecten van boomsoortenmenging op de biodiversiteit

Bomen spelen een sleutelrol in bosecosystemen. De identiteit van de bomen en het aantal boomsoorten in een bos bepalen in grote mate de rijkdom van organismen die een functionele relatie hebben met bomen, zoals, ongewervelde herbivoren (1) en mycorrhizavormende fungi (2). Er wordt verondersteld dat gemengde bossen meer biodiversiteit herbergen dan homogene bossen, omdat er een gevarieerder aanbod is van hulpbronnen en habitats (3; 4; 5;6). In gemengde eiken-beukenbossen is een grotere diversiteit aanwezig van organismen die afhankelijk zijn van bomen, dan in homogene eiken en beuken bossen, omdat in het gemengde bos zowel specialisten van eik als van beuk voorkomen.
